​Celebrating 20 Years!

2025 marks twenty years that the Huron Valley MLK Day committee has provided services to the community.  The annual March on Main, in Milford, food projects to assist area families in need, organizing educational projects that introduce diversity to our community and a multimedia contest that brings excitement for all ages while celebrating the life teachings of Dr. King.

This year will be filled with the usual as well as new endeavors that, once again, offers education and excitement. The committee's largest endeavors is a Children's Book Mission. We are asking the entire community to get involved during the 2024-2025 school year by purchasing 'a book at a time' for Michigan's most financially struggling schools. Then, of course, our annual multimedia contest begs for attention from our local community's talented children and adults. The contest will last from October, 2024, to mid January, 2025, culminating in various winners announced at the March on Main January 19, 2025.

To set the mood for celebrating MLK Day 2025, the committee will host a film appreciation night at the Milford Theater in January. This evening out will create an opportunity for a social gathering to meet our neighbors and make new friends. At last we will all meet on Sunday, January 19, 2025, in Milford to march through downtown Milford. The SHAC will be the location for the concluding ceremony, where there will be hot beverages and refreshments, a presentation of awards for the multimedia contest winners, and enjoyable music that will help us celebrate the holiday. 

The HV MLK Day Committee will then provide, for the first time, a poster exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution. This month-long free exhibit is designed for all ages, encouraging families to come together to view and discuss what we must never forget, African American History. The exhibit is called "A Place for All People," an appropriate name for our 2025 anniversary celebratory year as we continue to promote peace and unity, for citizens of all ages and backgrounds on behalf of Dr. King’s vision of the Beloved Community.

"Gifts of Art” Is back this year and provides a show where the spirit of giving meets the beauty of creativity. This special art show offers artists a unique opportunity to share their work with the community and provide an array of unique, one-of-a-kind pieces perfect for holiday gifting. From stunning paintings to intricate sculptures, each artwork embodies the essence of the artist's vision and craftsmanship. What better way to express love and appreciation during the holiday season than by gifting a piece of art, carefully chosen and imbued with personal meaning? Join us in celebrating the joy of giving and the power of art to inspire and uplift, as we showcase a curated selection of treasures waiting to be shared with loved ones

Adding to the excitement, our show coincides with local events such as Dog Day Afternoon and the Pup Crawl, ensuring a lively atmosphere and plenty of opportunities for animal-themed fun. As part of the Milford Memories festival, we're thrilled to showcase a stunning array of artwork generously donated by local artists. Each piece serves as a testament to the talent and vibrancy of our creative community. Festival-goers have the opportunity to purchase tickets and participate in the raffle, dropping their tickets into a bag for the chance to win their favorite artwork. With each ticket drawn, a lucky winner gets to take home a piece of art to treasure. Not only does this event add to the excitement of the festival, but it also serves as a vital fundraiser for both the SHAC and VFAA, supporting their mission to promote and nurture the arts in our community.

Welcome to "In Bloom," our enchanting art show presented in collaboration with the Milford Garden Club. Embracing the beauty of nature's bounty, this exhibition invites artists to explore the theme of blossoming flora and verdant landscapes. As part of the festivities, artists are invited to participate in a paint out on June 21st and 22nd, where they can immerse themselves in the lush gardens of our community, capturing the vibrant colors and delicate textures of blooming flowers firsthand. Alternatively, artists may choose to submit pieces that evoke the spirit of "In Bloom" in their own unique interpretation. Whether capturing the essence of a sun-dappled garden or showcasing the intricate details of a single blossom, "In Bloom" promises to be a celebration of the boundless beauty found within nature's ever-changing canvas.

Welcome to Pan 2024, our annual art exhibition that seamlessly intertwines poetry and artistry. As the name suggests, Pan invites artists to submit pieces accompanied by the poems that inspired them, creating a rich tapestry of creativity and expression. This juried show provides a platform for artists to showcase their interpretations of verse through various mediums, fostering a deeper connection between language and visual art. With submissions due by March 15th, we eagerly anticipate the diverse array of submissions that will grace our gallery walls, each one a testament to the boundless inspiration found in the marriage of poetry and art. We are thrilled to host the Muir Middle School student show, a vibrant exhibition celebrating the artistic talents of students in grades 6-8. From colorful paintings to intricate sculptures, this showcase represents a diverse range of mediums and styles, each piece reflecting the creativity and imagination of our young artists.
