2025
Celebrating 20 Years!
2025 marks twenty years that the Huron Valley MLK Day committee has provided services to the community. The annual March on Main, in Milford, food projects to assist area families in need, organizing educational projects that introduce diversity to our community and a multimedia contest that brings excitement for all ages while celebrating the life teachings of Dr. King.
This year will be filled with the usual as well as new endeavors that, once again, offers education and excitement. The committee's largest endeavors is a Children's Book Mission. We are asking the entire community to get involved during the 2024-2025 school year by purchasing 'a book at a time' for Michigan's most financially struggling schools. Then, of course, our annual multimedia contest begs for attention from our local community's talented children and adults. The contest will last from October, 2024, to mid January, 2025, culminating in various winners announced at the March on Main January 19, 2025.
To set the mood for celebrating MLK Day 2025, the committee will host a film appreciation night at the Milford Theater in January. This evening out will create an opportunity for a social gathering to meet our neighbors and make new friends. At last we will all meet on Sunday, January 19, 2025, in Milford to march through downtown Milford. The SHAC will be the location for the concluding ceremony, where there will be hot beverages and refreshments, a presentation of awards for the multimedia contest winners, and enjoyable music that will help us celebrate the holiday.
The HV MLK Day Committee will then provide, for the first time, a poster exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution. This month-long free exhibit is designed for all ages, encouraging families to come together to view and discuss what we must never forget, African American History. The exhibit is called "A Place for All People," an appropriate name for our 2025 anniversary celebratory year as we continue to promote peace and unity, for citizens of all ages and backgrounds on behalf of Dr. King’s vision of the Beloved Community.

Roots & Routes
Welcome to Roots and Routes: The Solo Show by Abigail Powers
We are thrilled to welcome you to Roots and Routes, the debut solo exhibition by artist Abigail Powers. In this captivating collection of original watercolor paintings, Abigail takes us on a visual journey through her life—a narrative told in brushstrokes, color, and emotion. From the quiet charm of Michigan's small towns to the diverse cultures and landscapes she has encountered on her travels, Abigail's work traces the intertwined paths of home and adventure, memory and discovery.
The theme of Roots and Routes is a celebration of how our origins shape who we become, and how the places we travel transform us along the way. Each painting serves as a chapter in Abigail’s personal story—a timeline of both the places she’s called home and the global experiences that have shaped her artistic vision. The exhibition captures the warmth of local charm, the joy of exploration, and the quiet nostalgia that comes with reflection on the past.
Whether you’re drawn to the peaceful landscapes of Michigan, intrigued by the vibrancy of foreign destinations, or captivated by the fluidity of watercolor as a medium, there is something for everyone in this collection. This is Abigail’s first solo show, and we invite you to not only admire the artistry but to celebrate the journey of an artist who has so generously shared a piece of her life with all of us.

Join us for our October meeting as we welcome S.Kay Young. S. Kay Young (b. 1952) is a Detroit based artist, advocate, instructor, with a 44 year photographic career. A descendant of the Eastern Band Cherokee Nation, her work is in numerous private and corporate collections, including The Detroit Institute of Arts, The University of Michigan and Cobo Center (The Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority) in Detroit.
S. Kay Young’s work is inspired by her love of, respect for and relationship with nature. Kay has a deep, personal reverence for trees. All her photographic series are initiated through messages she receives in dreams that come through her ancestors. Young has been given these detailed dreams since early childhood.
In 2014 Young and her Special Needs students were featured in and won an Emmy for PBS’s Detroit Performs series. In April 2019 Kay’s work was included in the curated exhibition Transformation at The Detroit Artist Market; the 106 ft X 155 ft installation was comprised of 98 self-portrait DNA images addressing identity and our DNA relationship to trees. The photographic installation reflected the quilts passed down by her mother and grandmother.
Young’s work has been shown in many solo and group exhibitions throughout her career. In addition, she has lectured at The Smithsonian’s National Museum for the American Indian in New York addressing the colonization of Native people in partnership with the American Indian Community House in New York City. September Guest Speaker
Frank’s ceramic artwork is a commentary on the true content of our daily lives and what we feel is important. His clay objects depict the range of mass communication our society produces. Headlines, promotional copy, logos, branding, and graphic design have all found a second voice in his personal art. The artwork borrows the language and advertising images of American culture and manipulates the content into a deeper narrative about life.
To create these works, Frank has to both create and accumulated a library of printing plates to mark the clay with impressions. The graphics of newspapers, promotional flyers, ads and logos cover the clay surface like wallpaper. This marriage of a two-dimensional message applied to a three-dimensional space is the foundation for his creativity. Surreal and random associations between images like Coca-cola, handguns, product instructions, and newspaper headlines direct the viewer through a personal journey of picture associations.

April Guest Speaker- CORNELIS VANSPRONSEN
Join us for our April meeting as we welcome Cornelis vanSpronsen. Born in the Netherlands, I spent my formative years in Holland, Indonesia and France before moving to the United States. I have enjoyed painting since I received my first set of oil paints when I was 12 years old. I spent my career as an art director, graphic artist and designer and operated my own design studio for 25 years before dedicating my time exclusively to painting.
My love of the impressionist and post impressionist movements has influenced my painting style and is evident in my tendency to loose, gestural and immediate brushwork.
I have recently started doing ink and watercolor urban sketching and travel journal sketching. I love capturing what I see all around me in these very loose sketches and feel that they are just another version of painting en plein air. You can check out his work at www.cornelisvanspronsen.com.
Please join us for the April VFAA meeting and bring two pieces of your own art to share for the Artist of the Year Award competition. Artist of the year winners will be awarded a gift certificate at the Holiday Party. Come to the SHAC for the guest speaker at 7:00 pm and the VFAA meeting at 7:30 pm.
